Bank of England must ‘hold nerve’ on interest rate rise

Raising rates before the economy is back on a firm footing risks “endangering both the recovery and the [deficit reduction programme]”, the Ernst & Young ITEM Club will say in a report published tomorrow.

Inflation was more than a percentage point above the Bank’s 2pc target for 11 of the past 12 months, forcing the Governor Mervyn King to write four letters of explanation to the Chancellor.

Figures published on Tuesday should show that the official measure of annual inflation, on the consumer price index (CPI), kept climbing in December.

The rate of price rises picked up from November’s 3.3pc to 3.5pc, Philip Shaw, an economist at Investec forecasts.

ITEM warns that inflation will rise even further above target in the next few months “up to 4pc temporarily”, subjecting the Bank potentially to “a serious loss of credibility”.

“Academics are openly saying that the [Bank’s] Monetary Policy Committee has lost the plot,” the report says.
