When you are looking at best Vanguard Mutual Funds for your 401k, you have already made one good decision. Vanguard is one of the leading and largest mutual fund companies in the world. They also have some of the lowest operating costs so the individual investors get more bang for their buck.

The right Vanguard fund for your retirement nest egg depends on a few factors that need to be decided on. One is how long before you are retiring and how active of an investor are you.

If you are near your retirement age, a conservative approach to investing should be done. If this is you then a balanced mutual fund with both stocks and bonds is the best approach. The closer you get towards retirement, the greater the percentage of bonds should be in your portfolio. There are several to choose from.

If you are in the early stages of your working career, then a more aggressive approach should be taken. Investments in several different mutual funds that contain mostly stocks are preferred. If this is you then several different ones should be invested in.  This way you will be particularly protected if one of them has a bad year.

For those investors that are not active, then Vanguard has a set of mutual funds that are geared for what time you are set to retire. They are in 5 year increments which can fit nearly any American worker. As the years pass and your retirement age approaches, the fund’s investments change to a more conservative approach to lower the risk associated with an investment.

If you are unsure, just look at the bank rates that are being offered on certificates of deposit. Most are below 3% for a 5 year CD. That does not even cover inflation. The best Vanguard Mutual Funds for your 401k are at or close to double digit returns.
